Hiking Hooiberg in Aruba (With My Dentist)
If you’re looking for one of the best quick adventures in Aruba, hiking Hooiberg should be high on your list. I’ve done this hike more times than I can count now, and it’s officially becoming a regular thing for me.
This time around, I brought my dentist along for his first-ever climb. Not only did he crush it — he liked it so much that we ended up doing the hike two days in a row. That alone should tell you how doable (and rewarding) this hike really is.
⸻
What Is Hooiberg?
Hooiberg is a volcanic hill located in the center of Aruba and is one of the highest points on the island. It’s famous for its staircase-style climb that leads to one of the best panoramic views you’ll find anywhere in Aruba.
While it may look intimidating from below, the hike itself is very manageable for most people.
⸻
How Hard Is the Hooiberg Hike?
The hike consists of about 600 cement steps leading straight to the top. There are handrails in certain sections, which is great if you need a quick breather or a little extra support along the way.
It’s not a long hike, but it will get your heart rate up — especially in the Aruba heat. Take your time, bring water, and don’t rush it. The climb is short enough that most people can finish it without issue.
⸻
The View at the Top
Once you reach the top, the payoff is huge.
You’re rewarded with a 360-degree view of the entire island — beaches, neighborhoods, the ocean, and everything in between. On a clear day, it’s one of the best viewpoints in Aruba and absolutely worth the effort.
This is the kind of spot that makes you stop, catch your breath, and just take it all in.
⸻
Why I Keep Coming Back
What makes Hooiberg so great is how easy it is to fit into your day. You don’t need a guide, special gear, or half a day carved out of your schedule. It’s a quick hike with a massive payoff, whether it’s your first time or your tenth.
The fact that my dentist loved it enough to go back the very next day says it all.
⸻
Tips Before You Go
• Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat
• Bring water (you’ll need it)
• Wear sneakers or good walking shoes
• Take breaks — there’s no rush
• Don’t forget your camera or phone for the views
⸻
Final Thoughts
If you’re visiting Aruba and want a little adventure without going extreme, hiking Hooiberg is a must. It’s simple, rewarding, and gives you one of the best perspectives of the island you’ll find anywhere.
If you’re lucky, you might even convince your dentist to do it twice.
